Those who are ordained as priests, deacons, and bishops receive the Sacrament of Holy Orders, to different degrees.
This Sacrament flows from the Jesus' Institution of th Church. He gave this gift to the Apostles so that Jesus' mission can be carried out in the church until the end.
The role of a bishop: Bishops are in the order of the episcopate. When priests are ordained a bishop, they receive the fullness of Holy Orders. They are the head of a particular Church/diocese. Every bishop is part of the line of Apostolic Succession, which extends back to St. Peter (therefore, Jesus.)
The role of a priest: Priests are in the order of the presbyterate. They are united with bishops in priestly dignity, and they look to the bishop of their diocese for guidance for their parish assignements and they help and advise the bishop in his role. When a priest is ordained, he is authorized to act in the person of Christ, and is consecrated to preach the Gospel, guide the people, and celebrate the Liturgy of the Church.
The role of a deacon: Deacons are in the order of the diaconate. The word deacon comes from a Greek word that means "service." Therefore, they ordained for service in the Church. Their services include: assisting at the liturgy, distributing Holy Communion, baptizing, assisting and blessing marriages, proclaiming the Gospel, preaching, presiding over funerals, and serving the poor and those in need.
