Baptism is the first of the Sacraments of Christian Initiation, preceding Eucharist and Confirmation. When a person is baptized, they are freed from Original Sin. They are plunged into the waters of death to rise to a new life in Christ, and they receive "the true light" (John 1:9) that will enlighten every follower of Christ.
Since, in Baptism, a permanent sacramental character (an invisible mark on the soul) is received, the sacrament of Baptism can never be repeated. Therefore, the church recognizes baptisms from other Christian denominations as fulfillment of the sacrament.
